ALVOR CAR HIRE RESERVATION
Alvor is an ancient coastal village, and one of the quieter resorts in the Algarve. Whilst there is a number of restaurants and bars to enjoy in the evening which lead down to the huge expanse of beach, take a turn off the main street and old Alvor is once more displayed by the lovely white washed house, small cobbled streets and occasional craft shop or boutique.
Alvor was founded in 436 by the Carthaginian General Aníbal Barca as a commercial port, which he named Portus Hannibalis. The settlement grew around the sea, near the place called Vila Velha, where a Celtic castro dominated the river mouth during the Iron Age. It is likely that it was the Roman colony of Ipses, which was authorized to mint currency, and was absorbed during the Roman era.
Taken by the Moors in 716, the settlement began to be referred to as Albur, and gained an impressive castle, with only vestiges remaining.
The parish of Alvor is located along the southern coast of Portimão surrounded by its municipal neighbours Mexilhoeira Grande and Portimão, and the municipality of Lagos (parish of Odiáxere).
The Ria de Alvor (Alvor Estuary) is located between the towns of Lagos and Portimão. Covering 1700 hectares it includes a diverse mix of habitats of brushwood, forest and agricultural land, comprising the estuary, dunes, marshes and salt-pans, and also the Quinta da Rocha and Abicada peninsula.
The Alvor beach is very big and with white sand. Alvor’s beach is a few minutes away from the town. It is worth the stroll, however, as it’s not only a fine expanse of sand, with enough waves to attract surfers, but is also huge in length.
The riverfront is one of Alvor’s most idyllic settings, as you sit and watch the fishing boats come and go. At the end, near the lifeboat station, is a collection of restaurants tempting you with the aroma of freshly barbecued fish.
There are plenty of activities on offer in and around Alvor when you have had your fill of lazing on the beach! Slide and Splash water park is only a short distance away in Lagoa, there are canoeing trips on the Alvor river, bicycles to hire, several golf courses on the doorstep, fishing trips and boat trips to see the caves around Lagos or dolphin watching.
