The frigate Hermenegildo Capelo is the third of four Navy ships will join the "Ocean Revival", an underwater park for scuba diving on the Algarve coast, after the sinking of the corvette "Oliveira e Carmo" and the patrol ship "Zambezi" in in 2012. "Oils, asbestos and all hazardous and noxious substances were removed, leaving only the hull and some materials that pose no danger of contamination of the marine environment," said Luís Sá Couto.

Scuba diving park in AlvorThe "Ocean Revival" has an overall cost estimated three million euros and will create an artificial reef to energize and explore the diving tourism in the Algarve.

"This market segment allows you to put the region on the international circuit diving, due to climate and abundance of species of marine flora and fauna," said Luís Sá Couto.

According Sá Couto, since the first two ships were sunk, have been performed about 2,400 dives, "which shows the importance of this project."

The frigate F481 Hermenegildo Capelo, the sole survivor of the class in Portugal, was acquired in the 60s of the twentieth century and several missions in African waters and the Far East, was the first ship of the Portuguese Navy to incorporate female soldiers.

With 2,700 tons and 102 feet long, the ship will join on Saturday, by 13:00, the corvette Oliveira and Carmo and Zambezi patrol ship, sunk in 2012, followed in September, the sinking of the ship oceanographic Almeida Carvalho.

The four ships were assigned zero cost by the Portuguese Navy to Portimão Council, which established a partnership with the company Submar, since the private promoter could not receive ships directly from the Navy.

The ships are submerged to 30 feet deep, resting on a sandbank at 5.5 kilometers off Alvor, getting the highest part of the ship about 15 feet from the surface, not to cause hindrance to the waterway.
